Lay & buddy statements

A useful statement describes what the writer personally knows or observed.

Reviewed October 15, 2026 · About 2 minutes

Who can write one?

VA considers statements from you and from people who know about your condition or relevant events. A fellow service member, family member, or another person may have helpful firsthand information.

What to describe

Use truthful, specific observations: what happened, approximately when, and what changed. Separate what you witnessed from what someone told you. Avoid guessing at a medical diagnosis or connection.

How to submit

VA accepts lay evidence in several formats, including VA Form 21-10210. A statement supports the record; it does not automatically replace medical evidence or establish eligibility.
