Claim status can change

Returning to evidence gathering does not tell you whether a claim will be approved.

Reviewed October 15, 2026 · About 2 minutes

Why a claim can move back

VA may return a disability claim to evidence gathering when more information is needed or additional evidence is submitted. This can happen after evidence review, rating, or preparation of the decision letter.

What the status can tell you

A status describes the stage of review. It does not guarantee a result or a completion date. Evidence gathering may include medical records, requests for information, or a claim exam.

What to do next

Read VA’s requests, respond by the stated deadlines, and keep your contact information current. Save copies of anything you submit. Once the claim is decided, read the decision letter for the actual outcome and reasons.
