Understanding C&P exams

A C&P exam helps evaluate your claim; it is not a treatment appointment.

Reviewed October 15, 2026 · About 2 minutes

Why VA may schedule an exam

A compensation and pension exam can help VA evaluate whether a condition is connected to service and how severe it is. Some claims can be decided from existing evidence, so not every claim requires an exam.

Before your appointment

Confirm the appointment and keep your contact information current. Submit new private medical records to VA before the exam. The examiner may review records you bring but cannot submit them to VA for you.

During and after the exam

Describe your symptoms and their effects honestly and specifically. This appointment is for evaluation, rather than treatment or prescriptions. The examiner provides findings; VA considers the evidence and makes the claim decision.
