Know your review options

Your evidence and decision letter help determine which review option fits.

Supplemental Claim

This option is generally for new and relevant evidence VA did not have when it reviewed the issue before. Identify what information is new and how it relates to the decision.

Higher-Level Review or Board Appeal

Higher-Level Review asks another reviewer to consider the existing record. You cannot submit new evidence through that option. A Board Appeal asks a Veterans Law Judge to review the decision; its available paths have different evidence and hearing rules.

Start with your decision letter

Read the reasons for the decision, available review options, and applicable deadlines. Different decisions and review paths can have different rules. Keep a copy of the letter and any submission confirmation.
