Dependents and disability pay

Eligible veterans with a combined rating of 30% or more may receive additional pay for qualified dependents.

Reviewed October 15, 2026 · About 2 minutes

Who may qualify?

If you are eligible for VA disability compensation and have a combined rating of at least 30%, you may qualify for additional benefits for eligible dependents. A spouse, qualifying child, or dependent parent may be eligible under different rules.

Keep the information current

Tell VA about changes that affect dependency benefits, such as divorce or changes in a child’s qualifying school status. Outdated information can lead to incorrect payments and a debt.

Before submitting an update

Check the requirements for your family situation and gather the requested details. Adding a dependent and updating school attendance can require different forms. Keep the confirmation and review VA’s response.
