Individual Unemployability

Eligible veterans may receive compensation at the 100% rate without a 100% underlying rating.

What IU means

Individual Unemployability, often called IU or TDIU, concerns service-connected disabilities that prevent substantially gainful employment. It can change the payment level while the underlying disability rating stays the same.

Rating requirements

The usual thresholds are one service-connected disability rated at least 60%, or multiple disabilities with one rated at least 40% and a combined rating of at least 70%. Certain cases may qualify below those thresholds. Meeting a percentage alone does not establish eligibility.

Evidence matters

VA reviews evidence about the effects of service-connected disabilities, along with work and education history. Marginal employment is treated differently from substantially gainful employment. Use the official guidance below to review the application and employment-information requirements.
