Intent to File

An Intent to File can protect a potential earlier effective date.

Reviewed October 15, 2026 · About 2 minutes

What it does

An Intent to File lets VA know you plan to file a claim while you gather information. If VA approves your completed claim, the Intent to File may help establish an earlier effective date. It does not guarantee approval or a particular payment.

Watch the one-year window

You must submit your completed claim within one year of the Intent to File for that potential date to apply. An Intent to File is not a completed claim.

A useful next step

Keep your confirmation and deadline with your records. Starting certain disability claim applications online while signed in can automatically record an Intent to File; check your application before submitting a separate form.
