Veteran learning center · Claim basics

Secondary conditions

A secondary claim needs evidence connecting the condition to a service-connected disability.

Reviewed October 15, 2026 · About 2 minutes

What makes it secondary?

A secondary claim involves another condition linked to a disability VA has already connected to service. Having two diagnoses alone does not establish that link.

What evidence matters?

VA needs evidence of the additional condition and its connection to the service-connected disability. Medical records or a clinician’s opinion are usually needed; in some circumstances, lay evidence may help.

Get organized

List the conditions involved and collect relevant treatment information. Describe your experience accurately, and leave medical conclusions to qualified clinicians. VA evaluates whether the evidence meets the requirements.
