Temporary 100% ratings during recovery

Qualifying recovery for a service-connected disability may support a temporary 100% rating.

Reviewed October 19, 2026 · Patriot Summit Veteran Resources

What does convalescence mean?

Convalescence means recovery after treatment. VA has a temporary 100% rating for certain recovery periods involving a service-connected disability. It does not apply to every operation or every time you miss work.

This guide covers the surgery or cast-recovery route. Other temporary-rating rules may apply to different situations. A temporary total rating is not the same as a permanent and total determination.

What treatment can qualify?

The treatment must be for a service-connected disability. Under the convalescent-rating rule, the medical evidence must establish one of these routes:

  • Surgery requiring at least one month of recovery.
  • Surgery with severe postoperative residuals, such as an incompletely healed surgical wound, required house confinement, or continued use of a wheelchair or crutches when regular weight-bearing is prohibited.
  • Immobilization of at least one major joint by a cast, without surgery.

VA reviews the treatment and recovery evidence. A diagnosis, a scheduled surgery or time away from work alone does not establish all the requirements.

Which records help explain the recovery?

As a practical organizing step, gather the operation or treatment report, discharge instructions and follow-up notes. Look for information identifying the treated condition, expected recovery period and activity restrictions. Keep copies of what you submit.

If treatment took place at a VA facility, identify the facility and dates when you apply so VA can obtain the records. For private records, you can submit them or follow VA's authorization process.

How long does the rating last?

The initial convalescent rating may cover one, two or three months under the applicable rule. Extensions can be available when the requirements are met; they are not automatic. The regulation provides different extension rules depending on the qualifying circumstances.

VA determines the period from the evidence and assigns the appropriate evaluation afterward. Follow the dates and instructions in your decision notice. No approval, payment amount or decision date is guaranteed.

Where do you start?
