Understanding a 0% rating

A 0% service-connected rating is different from a denial of service connection.

Reviewed October 15, 2026 · About 2 minutes

What a 0% rating means

VA has recognized the condition as connected to service, but assigned a noncompensable evaluation. A single 0% rating generally does not provide monthly disability compensation.

Other benefits may still be available

A service-connected rating of 0% may help establish eligibility for certain benefits, such as Veterans Affairs Life Insurance (VALife). Each benefit has its own requirements; a 0% rating does not make every benefit automatic.

Read the decision carefully

Review the explanation and evidence listed in your decision letter. If you disagree, check the available review options and deadlines. If the service-connected condition later gets worse, an increased-rating claim may be appropriate with current supporting evidence.
