CHAMPVA: family health coverage checks
A veteran’s 100% rating alone does not automatically establish family eligibility.
Reviewed October 17, 2026 · Serving veterans nationwide
Check the qualifying relationship and status
CHAMPVA may cover an eligible spouse or dependent child of a veteran with a service-connected permanent and total disability, and certain survivors. Other qualifying categories and detailed rules apply.
A 100% rating and permanent-and-total status are different concepts. Confirm the veteran’s status and the family member’s eligibility rather than assuming coverage.
Check other health coverage rules
A person eligible for TRICARE is not eligible for CHAMPVA. Medicare eligibility and enrollment requirements may also affect CHAMPVA eligibility. Read the current rules for your age and coverage situation.
Apply using the current instructions
CHAMPVA shares the cost of covered health care; it is not the same as enrolling the veteran in VA health care. Review the application and supporting-document requirements, keep copies, and confirm the coverage decision before relying on the benefit for bills.
