Build an organized starting point.
- Write down the conditions and service events you want to discuss.
- Identify your service and treatment records, providers, and any firsthand statements.
- Read about Intent to File if you need time to gather information, and follow its completion deadline.
Focus on what has changed.
If a rated, service-connected condition has worsened, an increased-rating claim may be an option. Current evidence should describe the change. Disagreeing with a recent decision is a different question; check the review options and deadline in that letter.
- Record symptom frequency, duration, and effects on work or daily activities.
- Identify recent treatment and changes since the last evaluation.
Begin with the decision and the deadline.
Read the reasons for each issue, the evidence considered, favorable findings, and review instructions. A Supplemental Claim, Higher-Level Review, or Board Appeal may be available, depending on the decision and circumstances. Do not assume the same evidence rules apply to every option.
Watch for requests and keep your records.
Check claim status and correspondence for evidence requests or appointments. Save submission confirmations. A status change alone does not establish the outcome. Certain qualifying circumstances may support priority processing.
