Save the notice and its enclosures. Look for the issue decided, evidence considered, explanation, favorable findings, and review instructions. The notice and attached rating decision may work together to explain the result.
| Look for | What to check |
|---|---|
| Decision & issues | Match each condition or benefit to the result described for that issue. |
| Evidence | Compare the listed records and statements with the information you submitted. |
| Favorable findings | Identify facts VA accepted in your favor. A favorable finding is not necessarily a grant of the whole claim. |
| Reasons for the decision | For a denial, identify which requirement VA says was not established. |
| Rating & effective date | If assigned, note the percentage and effective date separately. The effective date depends on claim-specific rules. |
| Review instructions | Locate the available options, forms, and deadline that apply to your decision. |
A fictional example
This simplified example explains how sections relate. It is not an actual VA letter, client story, or recommended outcome.
One issue, different pieces of information
- Result
- Service connection for Condition A is denied.
- Favorable finding
- A current diagnosis of Condition A is acknowledged.
- Reason stated
- A connection between the condition and service was not established.
- Question to investigate
- What did VA say was missing, and what evidence did it consider about that connection?
Acknowledging a diagnosis does not, by itself, establish every requirement for service connection. Read the full explanation before deciding what information to gather or which review option to consider.
Check the deadline before your next step.
For most VA benefits, you have one year from the date on the decision letter to request Higher-Level Review or a Board Appeal. Some decisions have shorter limits. A Supplemental Claim can generally be filed later, but timing can affect the effective date. Follow your own notice.
