Effective dates & back pay

The effective date and the date you receive money are different questions.

Reviewed October 17, 2026 · Serving veterans nationwide

1. Find the effective date for each issue

A disability award’s effective date is generally the later of the date VA received the claim or the date entitlement arose. Exceptions exist, including some claims filed soon after separation, increases, presumptive conditions, and continuously pursued reviews.

2. Check the claim history

Keep filing confirmations, Intent to File information if applicable, decisions, and review-request dates. Do not assume a diagnosis date or service-separation date automatically becomes the effective date. The claim type and governing rules matter.

3. Read payment information separately

An earlier effective date can affect retroactive compensation, but a simple percentage-times-months estimate may miss rate changes, dependency changes, offsets, withholding, or other adjustments. Read the award’s payment explanation and ask about discrepancies.

If you disagree with an effective date, check the decision’s review options and deadline. A back-pay amount is not promised by this guide or our calculator.
