What is a C-file?
C-file is shorthand for a VA claims file. It is a benefits record, and you can request access to your own records. Seeing the record can help you organize questions rather than relying only on memory.
VA Form 20-10206 lists a claims file, service treatment records, disability-exam reports and other record types as choices. Select what you actually need; a request for a particular exam report is different from a request for the claims file.
Choose an official request route
Start at VA's current Form 20-10206 page. It offers an online request tool as an alternative to sending the paper form. The form is called a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) or Privacy Act (PA) Request.
If you use the paper route, follow its current instructions for identification, signature and delivery. The form has a Claims File (C-File) selection in its compensation-and-pension records section. For a specific C&P exam, the instructions ask you to identify the exam date in Remarks.
Keep your request organized
As a practical step, save a copy of the request and its confirmation, and note the date submitted. When records arrive, compare them with the documents you already keep. Write down any questions or items you cannot locate.
This guide does not promise a delivery date. Continue monitoring your claim correspondence and any instructions while your records request is pending.
Protect personal information
A Privacy Act request concerns access to your own personal records, subject to applicable exemptions. VA requires identifying information for these requests. Provide it through the official request process.
Keep your completed request, identifiers and medical information out of public comments and Messenger. This website's consultation form is for general contact questions, not records uploads.
