State veteran benefits: start with your state
State benefits vary; a VA rating does not create the same benefits in every state.
Reviewed October 17, 2026 · Serving veterans nationwide
Find your official state veterans agency
Use VA’s state veterans affairs directory to locate the agency for your state. It is a useful starting point for state programs, local contacts, and the office that administers a particular benefit.
Ask about the exact eligibility rules
Depending on the program, requirements may involve residence, discharge, service dates, disability status, income, property ownership, or other factors. Do not assume a tax exemption, education benefit, or fee waiver offered in one state applies in another.
Confirm the administering office and deadline
Ask which office accepts the application, what documents it needs, and whether there is a filing period or renewal requirement. Save the current instructions and a submission confirmation. State eligibility decisions are separate from VA compensation decisions.
