VR&E: employment & independence
Applying for Veteran Readiness and Employment starts an evaluation; it does not guarantee a training award.
Reviewed October 17, 2026 · Serving veterans nationwide
Know the starting requirements
A veteran may be eligible to apply for VR&E with a service-connected disability rating of at least 10% and a discharge other than dishonorable. Application eligibility is different from entitlement to services.
Prepare for the evaluation
A vocational rehabilitation counselor evaluates entitlement and works with you on suitable goals and a plan if you qualify. Be ready to discuss how service-connected conditions affect work, your employment history, skills, interests, and barriers.
VR&E can involve employment services, training, or independent-living support when applicable. It is not simply a guaranteed additional GI Bill.
Check time limits and your plan
Time-limit rules can differ based on separation date and individual circumstances. Use the current eligibility page and talk with the counselor before assuming a particular school, degree, equipment purchase, or payment will be approved.
