Intent to File: gather evidence and submit your completed claim within one year

Intent to File

An Intent to File can establish a potential earlier effective date while you gather information. You have one year to submit your completed claim.

C and P exam: confirm your appointment and keep contact information current

Understanding C&P exams

An exam may help VA evaluate service connection and severity. Not every claim requires one. Confirm any scheduled appointment.

Buddy statements: be truthful, specific, and describe firsthand observations

Lay & buddy statements

VA considers statements from people who know about a condition or related events. Firsthand, truthful, specific observations can be useful.

Secondary conditions: evidence must link the new condition to a service-connected disability

Secondary conditions

A secondary claim involves a condition linked to a service-connected disability. Evidence must show the connection; medical records or a clinician’s opinion are usually needed.

Decision review options: Higher-Level Review, Supplemental Claim, and Board Appeal

Know your review options

A Supplemental Claim generally uses new and relevant evidence. Higher-Level Review uses the existing record, with no new evidence. A Board Appeal is another option. Check your decision letter for available options and deadlines.

VA combined ratings: 50 percent and 30 percent combine to 65 percent, rounded to 70 percent

Understanding combined ratings

VA combines ratings rather than simply adding them. For example, 50% and 30% combine to 65%, rounded to 70% when these are your only ratings and no special rules apply.

Claim status can change: more evidence can move a claim back to evidence gathering

Claim status can change

A claim can return to evidence gathering when VA needs more evidence or you submit additional evidence. That status change alone does not tell you the outcome. Check VA’s claim status tool for requests and read your decision letter when available.

Individual Unemployability may pay at the 100 percent rate without changing the disability rating

Individual Unemployability

VA may pay qualifying Veterans at the 100% rate when service-connected disabilities prevent substantially gainful employment. The underlying disability rating does not change, and VA reviews medical, work, and education evidence.

A combined VA disability rating of 30 percent or higher may qualify for added compensation for eligible dependents

Dependents and disability pay

Veterans eligible for VA disability compensation with a combined rating of at least 30% may qualify for added payments for eligible dependents. Review your listed dependents and report family or school-status changes promptly to help avoid overpayments. Eligibility rules apply.

A zero percent VA disability rating still recognizes service connection

Understanding a 0% rating

A 0% rating recognizes service connection but is noncompensable. By itself, a single 0% rating generally does not provide monthly disability payments. Other benefits, such as VALife insurance, may still be available under their own eligibility rules.

Private medical records

You can submit private treatment records with your claim or authorize VA to try to obtain them. VA Forms 21-4142 and 21-4142a work together for the request process.

Priority processing: qualifying hardship may support a priority request

Priority processing requests

Certain qualifying circumstances, including extreme financial hardship, may support priority handling. VA Form 20-10207 is one way to request consideration. Include available supporting information; no decision date or outcome is guaranteed.
